Intake Volunteer

The Innocence Project, Inc. is an independent public charity operating a non-profit pro-bono legal clinic for clients around the country.  The Project was founded in 1992 by Prof. Barry Scheck and civil rights lawyer Peter Neufeld as part of the Cardozo School of Law/Yeshiva University.  The Project represents prisoners nationwide for whom post-conviction DNA testing can prove innocence and seeks to redress the underlying causes of wrongful conviction through systemic criminal justice reform.

The Intake Volunteer will work with the Case Director and Case Assistants to process the many requests the Project receives by inmates for legal representation.  The Intake Volunteer will return calls requesting information and keep records of such requests. The work is detailed and requires an individual that is organized and systematic. The individual should be able to make an ongoing weekly commitment of at least 15 hours per week during regular business hours.

Position Responsibilities:

- Screen incoming telephone calls
- Take detailed messages
- Return calls

We are seeking someone who is/has:

Professional phone manner;
Highly organized and experienced in record keeping;
Very detail oriented;
Prior experience in a legal and/or non-profit setting;
Ability to work in a high-energy environment;
Strong written and verbal skills;
Experience balancing multiple tasks;
Passionate commitment to social justice and to the Innocence Project’s goals, mission, and values;
Collegial and collaborative work style;
Bi-lingual English/Spanish is a plus but not a requirement.
